Speech Competition

Congratulations to Emily McLaughlin, Izaac Reed and Jacob Hingston who will be representing Studio 17 in the Year 5-6 Speech Competition tomorrow in the school hall at 1:30pm. Jump Rope Success

A warm Spring day welcomed all those in Year 3-6 as they completed a number of Jump Rope for Heart activities around the school today. There were a lot of hot and tired bodies from Studio 17 that headed home filled with success from their jumping activities whether it was skipping with a partner, skipping to music, working in a team or trying new moves with the long rope. Well day everyone for being prepared to go-for-it!

Jump Rope for Heart

Jump Rope for Heart is being held at school tomorrow for Year 3-6, starting at 11:15am and running through until 2:30pm. Come along and see the many skipping activities that Studio 17 will be involved in. 

We'd love you to support our "Speed Skipper" Kam Currey who will be competing against other Year 5-6 students from Studios 13-16 to see who can skip the most in two minutes just before lunch.

A shared lunch will be held out on the grass area at the conclusion of the Speed Skipping Competition, so it would be great to see your families come along!

We wish Kam Currey - Studio 17's Speed Skipping Representative the best of luck!

House Competitions

What a beautiful day to hold our school wide "Olympic Afternoon" based on our school houses - Freyberg, Hillary, Rutherford and Seddon. We started with chariot races, moved on to the javelin and relays followed by team competitions and ending with a medal ceremony in the hall. Well done to my team Freyberg for coming second overall and receiving a silver medal!

Olympic Afternoon

After all the rainy, busy days that we have had our Olympic afternoon is finally here. Don't forget to be as creative as you can by dressing up in your house colours, we want you to all get involved. See you tomorrow afternoon at KBS, come along and have some fun!

Disco Night

Out came the disco clothes as we met up at the hall last Thursday for the Year 5-8 school disco. Great night for catching up with friends and getting our groove on to the sounds from Mr George. Thanks to the school PTA for organising this evening for us!

Home Learning Presentations - Week 9

Each term we complete three pieces of Home Learning with a family member. Here are some examples on what we have been working on for our Week 9 presentations.

Shelby Smith - "I wrote a profile about my niece. Some of the things that I found out about her were her favourite sayings and colours." 

Josh Gibbs - "I wanted a particular toy, but it is not yet available at The Warehouse, so with help from home I decided to make one of my own and here is the result. I discovered that it spins better on a hard surf than on the carpet."

Savanna Hamblyn - "I saw a piece of canvas art at my grandmother's house, so I decided to make one of my own when I was visiting. I had to get a canvas, a type of straw that you can get from a florist and paint. I glued on the straw, creating a pattern and then I painted over the top and here is the finished piece."

Jarred Bowden - "I have been practising drawing different animals from the ocean and here are some of the pieces that I have completed."

Emily McLaughlin - "Did you know that carrots used to be purple? I decided to find out more about purple carrots and then grow my own after we found a carrot that had got stuck in one of our pipes at home. I have planted some seeds and they are just beginning to grow. I'm looking forward to seeing what they taste like." 

Brodie Cahill - "I completed a canvas with help from Mum on our family dog Jack. We have just had to have him put down as he was very old and he could no longer walk properly. My Dad got him when he was only 21 or 22. We really miss him!"

Jackson Hendry - "I built a ramp with Dad for our dog Bella because she can no longer get up and down from Mum and Dad's bed. Now she can walk up herself without one of us having to lift her up. From this work I learnt how to make a ramp, to use tools safely and what tools you should leave for an adult to use."

                                 

Tiaki Maindonald - " I made some chocolate brownie biscuits with help from my Nana. Once the mixture was ready, they took 15 minutes to bake. I chose to do this activity for my Home Learning because I like to eat these biscuits!"

Abbey Parke - " I learnt how to read a recipe, so that I could make cupcakes. My Mum and friend Sophie helped me to make them, so that I could bring them to school to share."

Our reading group activity last week was to write our own poem based on one we had read in a School Journal. Her are two of our original pieces of work:

It lives in the jungle,

Scary and dangerous.

A killer in disguise.

Studio 17 Winter Sports Stars 2012

Winter sport has come to an end and many clubs have held an afternoon to celebrate their teams and the achievements of their members. Studio 17 have a number of sport stars of their own and we too would like to acknowledge how proud we are of them all.

Olympic Fever

Olympic Fever hit Studio 17 this term as both the Olympics and Paralympics were held in London, England. As part of our studies we enthusiastically followed Team GB (Great Britain) and watched them go from strength to strength, while supporting the Kiwis too! We were divided into four teams and each team was allocated one of the four countries that make up Great Britain. They are England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We then had to work together to find information about these countries and then share our learning to the rest of the class. A big thank you also goes out to Adele Hingston (Jacob's Mum) and Mandy McLaughlin (Emily's Mum) who took the time to come into Studio 17 and talk to us about growing up in England and Guernsey.

Silver Ferns in the Making

During Term Three we have been developing our skills in netball, learning how to play the game and being able to work together as a team. We've learnt different types of throws, while incorporating some of the rules that are needed to play the game. 

Year 5-8 Disco

Our next disco run by the PTA is coming up in the school hall this Thursday 13th September starting at 7pm at a cost of $2. Come along and have some fun, the photos below show there was fun had by students from Studio 17 with their friends a few months ago.
