High Five Fresh Fruit Day

Studio 17 were involved in a school wide day of activities based on fruit, fitness and fun. The morning started with Syndicate fitness followed by whole school Jump Jam and fresh fruit and vegetables for Morning Tea. During the week we took our trip to the supermarket to look at healthy food options and this afternoon ended in a range of "Top Town" activities where we competed in our houses. There will be a few tired people heading home this afternoon, lucky they have the weekend to recover!

Trip to Kaiapoi New World

Yesterday we headed off to New World as a follow up to our work on healthy eating. When we arrived we met Marewa, our nutritionist and in groups she sent us off to different areas of the supermarket to check out the nutrition information on the back of a variety of products. We had to choose healthy options as well as treat ones, so that we could then compare the information. We found that some foods we eat quite often, are not that healthy for us and should only be had as a treat. We also looked at the different fruit and vegetables that we could buy in the supermarket.
We now get to go back to school, plan a healthy lunch and spend $60 at New World for our class, so watch this space!

William and Josh check out what is in Fanta.

Shelby, Max and Jamie look at the nutrition value of a bottle of milk.

Jarred, Alana and Nicole discuss which bread to choose.

Jacob and Kam look at their options for occasional snack foods.

Sabrina studies the health value of a packet of almonds.

We're Getting Healthy!

Today Marewa Kraak came and talked to us about healthy eating as part of  the "Food for Thought" progamme from Foodstuffs. We learnt how much sugar is in many of the drinks that we can buy from the local supermarket. She got us to rank them from the least healthy to the most healthy, we were quite surprised with some of the results. We then learnt how to read the nutrition labels on the back of some cereal boxes and found that "Wheat Biskits" were the healthiest.
Lots of questions to answer after ranking a variety of drinks depending on sugar level. Containers of sugar can be seen in front of each drink, showing the amount each contains.

Some brain gym to help us with our thinking!
